Students’ Field School success stories

The Students’ Field School (SFS) set up within the framework of the Farmer Entrepreneur course trains the students to acquire farm management skills. The Vocational Schools of Bokonbaev, Belovodsk and Jangyjer villages, where the above mentioned course is being delivered have opened students’ field schools on potato growing. Trainers from other Vocational Schools visited the Vocational School No.81 in Bokonbaev village to have experience exchange on the Stu-dents’ Field School activities.  
The SFS presentations were organized and conducted on the following dates and sites to reflect the outcomes of SFS’s work: on June 24, in the Kyrgyz Russian Lyceum No.28 in Belovodsk village; on June 26, in the Vocational School No.81 and on June 27, in the Vocational School No. 43 in Jangyjer village. The students have demonstrated the skills they have acquired on potato growing. They have learned all steps including planting, handling, watering and weeding techniques in details. As reffered to Elaman Duishembiev, STAR Project Trainer, there will be organized training events on livestock related topics during SFS activities to be continued in winter. 

Belovodsk Students’ Field School: 24.06.09
SFS students have answered to the questions on a quiz program especially developed for this purpose and have shown ways how to plant potatoes. Relevant visual aids and charts were hanged there. The students have proved their gained knowledge through examples and practical exercises on soil preparation, soil fertility improvement and po-tato variety selection, etc.. At the end they have offered some processed potato prod-ucts to the participants. 

Bokonbaev Students’ Field School: 26.06.09
29 people participated in SFS presentation during which the students have shared their knowledge and demonstrated their skills on potato cultivation. They planted potatoes on three experimental rows. The students have shown practical exercises related to soil types influencing on crop productivity as well as peculiarities of using these cultivation methods. It was also given an information about biohumus. Untill the planted potato is harvested, the students make season long observations by collecting information on a size of potato stems and leaves and comparing them. Thus, they learn potato cultivation technology on practice basis. The visiting participants became also interested in the SFS’s work since such experiments were done during the Soviet times only. And nowadays, the students field school work is being efficiently implemented within the framework Farmer Entrepreneur training course.

Jangyjer Students’ Field School: 27.06.09
The presentation of the Vocational School No.43 has been conducted in the farm of the mentioned Lyceum. The participants were the STAR Project trainers, people from Bok-onbaev SFS, farmers from Nijnechuisk village as well as the Lyceum teachers and stu-dents. The students used a creative approach having prepared a stage adaptation on potato, where they gave interesting information about potato nature, conducive condi-tions for potato growing and its pests. This year they have planted potatoes of Santo and Nevsky varieties on an special experimental plot. They also have planted potato hybrid for ovservation purposes. The students have shown diversity of processed po-tato products made by using the creative approach. After presentation the visitors were shown the Vocational School base in general and successful results of the school on landscape design was demonstrated. The students-florists are taking responsibility to grow flowers, whilst students-welders are producing flowerpots. Thus, the Vocational School is graduating necessary specialists, who are completing each others work.
